Outre les sujets religieux et les portraits, Cranach a également peint des scènes mythologiques qui ont inspiré la nouvelle pensée protestante, donnant lieu à des interprétations très inhabituelles de la mythologie classique, comme on peut le voir dans le Nymphe reclin. Cranach a développé un canon de beauté féminine qui est totalement en contradiction avec l'idéal classique et est chargé d'un puissant érotisme.
