Lucas Cranach et son atelier ont produit de nombreux portraits imprimés et peints de Martin Luther, avec qui l'artiste connaissait bien. Dans ce petit panneau, le réformateur est montré de près, en trois quarts de profil, portant les vêtements protestants noirs distinctifs. L'image fut probablement jointe à un portrait de Philipp Melanchthon, théologien, chef intellectuel de la Réforme, et collaborateur principal de Luther. Plusieurs versions survivantes indiquent que l'appariement a bénéficié d'une large circulation. La peinture actuelle, qui montre une certaine rigidité formule, doit être considérée comme une répétition par l'atelier de Cranach.
