Cette huile sur cuivre, faite pour le cardinal Benedetto Giustiniani, incarne le style mature de Ludovico : la pose de la Vierge évoque les sibyles Michelangelo dans la Chapelle Sixtine, tandis que les courbes élégantes résonnent avec les figures Parmigianino. Ludovico a donc rendu hommage aux grands artistes du siècle précédent. Saint Bernard, diplomate infatigable pour le pape Innocent II du XIIe siècle, apparaît en blanc contre un chœur de saints comme Pierre, André, Paul et Catherine d'Alexandrie.
