Le comte Giacomo Durazzo, diplomate génois, arrive à Vienne en 1749. Ernestine Aloisia Ungnad von Weissenwolff l'a épousé l'année suivante. En tant que directeur des théâtres impériaux de 1754 à 1764, Durazzo a promu la réforme de l'opéra italien de Gluck. Ce portrait date probablement du début des années 1760, peu avant le départ de Durazzo pour Venise. Martin van Meytens est né à Stockholm, où son père avait émigré de Hollande. En 1717, il s'installe à Paris et y travaille comme portrait-miniaturiste. Il voyage beaucoup en Allemagne, en Italie et en Autriche, avant d'accepter en 1731 la position de peintre officiel à la cour impériale de Vienne.
