Ce manteau aurait été fait par Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot) et ses camarades d'école, bien qu'il ne soit pas clair à quel âge elle avait été faite. Marie Ann a fréquenté trois internats. Mlle Lathom à Attleborough, Nuneaton, de cinq à six ans. Elle a ensuite déménagé à Mme Wallingtons à Nuneaton et y est restée jusqu'à 12 ans. Le dernier déménagement a eu lieu en 1832 à l'école Miss et Miss Franklin, Nant Glyn, à Coventry. Marie Ann y est restée jusqu'à ce que sa mère soit rappelée chez elle vers Noël 1835.
