Les locomotives ont été achetées en 1889 par la Companhia Nacional (CN) pour la ligne Dão (de Santa Comba Dão à Viseu), où elles ont circulé jusqu'en 1947. Ceux-ci étaient normalisés et seraient très semblables à l'ordre précédent (CP E80), qui facilitait l'entretien et l'exploitation. Au CN, outre la numérotation, on leur a donné des noms associés à l'histoire et à la géographie du territoire dans lequel ils allaient opérer, qui les distinguaient de ceux des Toua, avec la même numérotation.
