Premier artiste américain à s'inscrire à la Royal Academy de Londres, Brown a également étudié sous ses compatriotes Gilbert Stuart et Benjamin West. Brown resta à Londres pendant une bonne partie de sa carrière et jouit du sommet de son succès à la fin des années 1780, à peu près au moment où il peignit ce portrait élaboré. Comme Copley, dont il a ému le travail, Brown entoure son visage clairement défini avec des vêtements, des accessoires et des effets de fond dépeints. Il était bien connu pour sa représentation complexe des tissus, comme en témoignent de nombreuses preuves ici.
