Mathijs Naiveu était un soi-disant fijnschilder. Selon Arnold Houbraken, il rejoint l'atelier d'Abraham Toorenvliet vers 1665 pour apprendre à dessiner. A partir de 1667/69 Naiveu a étudié avec Gerrit Dou, fondateur de l'école Fijnschilder.
