C'est l'une des peintures les plus célèbres au plafond de la chapelle Sixtine. Un mythe inondé ou un mythe de déluge est une histoire mythique d'une grande inondation envoyée par une divinité ou des divinités pour détruire la civilisation comme un acte de rétribution divine. C'est un thème répandu parmi de nombreuses cultures, bien qu'il soit peut-être mieux connu dans les temps modernes à travers le récit biblique et coranique de l'Arche de Noé, l'histoire puranique hindoue de Manu, à travers Deucalion dans la mythologie grecque ou Utnapishtim dans l'Epic de Gilgamesh.
