Mierevelt était l'un des portraitistes les plus recherchés de La Haye, bien qu'il soit né et mort à Delft, et il a gardé un grand atelier pour satisfaire tous ses clients. Beaucoup de ses portraits trahissent aussi la main d'un élève. Ceci, cependant, est l'un des plus puissants et émouvants de tous les portraits de Mierevelts de vieillards et doit être entièrement son propre travail. Un de ses étudiants les plus connus est Anthonie Palamedesz également représenté dans la collection Hallwyl. La peinture est signée à gauche : M Mierevelt Aetatis 80 Ao1624.
