Le terme char fut appliqué dans les temps anciens aux véhicules à deux roues utilisés pour la guerre, pour la course et pour la cérémonie. Environ 1650 le nom a été ressuscité et appliqué à des demi-coaches élégantes caractérisées par un corps élevé et des roues hautes. Plus léger et moins cher que les autocars complets, les chars étaient des véhicules de luxe populaires aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Cette version a été nommée d'après son designer, Alfred Guillaume Gabriel Comte D
