Encadré par les plis d'une tente circulaire, Sir Anthony Mildmay frappe une pose détendue et confiante, sa main droite reposant sur une table recouverte de tissu et sa gauche saisissant la poignée de sa fine épée à double tranchant appelée rapier. Casque, gantelet et couvertures de jambes sont dispersés, comme si Mildmay a été interrompu dans l'acte de mettre ou de retirer son armure. Malgré sa petite échelle, ce portrait révèle l'émulation de Nicholas Hilliard (et la rivalité avec) portrait de cour grandeur nature, tandis que son attention méticuleuse au détail et l'utilisation de matériaux coûteux comme l'or coquille reflètent le monde raffiné des tournois courtois.
