Nicholaos Tzafouris était l'un des nombreux peintres d'icônes travaillant dans la ville de Candia (aujourd'hui Iraklion) en Crète à l'époque où la Crète était sous le contrôle de Venise. La combinaison d'éléments byzantins et latins vus dans de nombreuses icônes crétoises a été bien accueillie localement et en Italie. L'inscription grecque sur cette icône décrit un type d'icône byzantine dans lequel les soldats traînent le Christ à Golgotha. L'image ici, cependant, est de type occidental, montrant le Christ portant la croix à Golgotha. Le soldat avant le Christ porte une armure italienne contemporaine, et ceux derrière lui portent une armure byzantine ou crétoise.
