Une artiste néo-zélandaise à l'étranger, peinte par son tuteur irlandais. Dorothy Kate Richmond (1861-1935) a pris des cours de dessin d'été avec Norman Garstin en France, Cornwall, Belgique, et Hollande entre 1901 et 1903. Elle et son compagnon de voyage, le peintre Frances Hodgkins, ont convenu qu'à Garstin ils avaient enfin rencontré leur « artiste idéal & homme ». La paire a exposé ensemble à Wellington à leur retour – mais pendant que Hodgkins a poursuivi une carrière à l'étranger, Richmond est resté, devenant une figure centrale dans la scène artistique locale.
