A un carrefour, Hercules rencontra Vice, qui offrit un chemin de facilité et de plaisir, et Virtue, qui marqua une ascension accidentée menant au vrai bonheur — une leçon morale soulignée par la devise sur l'entablature en haut à gauche: [HO]NOR ET VIRTUS/[P]OST MORTE FLORET (Honneur et Virtue Flourish après la Mort). Les longs talons du Vice ont déchiré le bas du héros. Un couteau déchiqueté s'appuie contre la poitrine du sphinx qui soutient son trône.
