Le peintre miniature Hall était parmi un certain nombre de portraitistes suédois qui jouissaient d'une grande popularité en France, montrant au Salon officiel et patronné par l'élite culturelle et politique. La baby-sitter, Maurice, a commencé comme avocat avant de devenir portraitiste qui a compté l'impératrice Catherine la Grande (1729-1796) et la reine Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) parmi ses partisans. Datée en 1772, cette miniature représente Maurice dans le col ouvert et les vêtements simples qui devaient être destinés à annoncer sa nouvelle carrière d'artiste.
