Manet visita le Grand Canal de Venise en septembre 1875 avec son ami et collègue peintre de l'extérieur du cercle impressionniste James Tissot, qui s'était installé à Londres après la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870 à 1871. Bien que la splendeur de Venise ait inspiré de nombreux grands artistes, Manet a eu du mal à s'y installer, mais malgré cela il a réussi à peindre l'une de ses œuvres les plus impressionnistes.
