Comme tant d'autres artistes du jour Pieter Lastman est allé à Rome quand ses études ont été terminées. Il y rencontre des artistes comme le peintre allemand Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610). Inspiré par Elsheimer, Lastman adopta et développa les pièces dites de cabinet, de petites peintures montrant des scènes de la Bible, de l'histoire ou de la mythologie. La peinture
