Chaque figure est accompagnée d'un attribut: aux pieds de la foi un chien, un symbole commun de fidélité; aux pieds de la charité un pélican symbolique du sacrifice du Christ; et aux pieds de l'espérance un phénix, symbolisant la résurrection du Christ. La série de figures allégoriques, vue contre un paysage continu, était probablement destinée à décorer l'arrière d'un scallier (un banc ou un lit de jour à dossier élevé) ou à être placé dans un wainscoting.
