Raymond McIntyre arrive en Angleterre de Nouvelle-Zélande en 1909 et se jette rapidement dans le monde de l'art londonien. Il rejoint le groupe de Londres progressiste, expose avec le prestigieux New English Art Club et sécurise la première Gouchil Gallery comme son concessionnaire. Ce autoportrait vient de la hauteur de McIntyre.
