Comme les adeptes des sectes Pure Land plus populaires, Gukyoku Reisai, un moine zen éminent, croyait en la puissance de salut du Bouddha Amida (Sanskrit: Amitābha). Ce couplet, écrit en écriture chinoise cursive, lit, de la colonne de droite à la gauche: Pour une personne totalement mauvaise, il n'y a pas d'autre moyen opportun.
