L'homme est probablement Cornelis van Beresteyn (1586–1638), un riche bourgmestre de Delft. Sa pose restreinte et son expression sobre contrastent avec l'animation et l'accessibilité que Rembrandt attribue habituellement aux membres de la société d'Amsterdam. À l'époque, les portraits à Delft et dans la ville voisine de la cour de La Haye étaient remarquablement conservateurs, suivant une tradition qui remontait aux portraits royaux espagnols du milieu des années 1500. Rembrandt est connu pour avoir peint quelques portraits à La Haye en 1632.
