Le peintre anglais Bonington voyagea en Italie pour la première fois au printemps de 1826. C'est l'un des premiers tableaux qu'il a produits pendant qu'il y était, le ou vers le 11 avril. Son compagnon de voyage a écrit que nous sommes à Milan, où enfin nous avons déballé et mis pour utiliser nos boîtes de couleur. Nous avons peint l'intérieur de la cathédrale, effet nocturne, et je pense que si Bonington peut produire les peintures qu'il a esquissé sa réputation sera faite. Comme la vue du Grand Canal, Venise aussi dans le Kimbell
