Il a été peint en 1860 à partir d'une célèbre photo de Garibaldi que Gustave Le Gray avait prise. La même année, ce dernier s'arrêta à Palerme alors qu'il voyageait vers l'est avec Alexandre Dumas après avoir appris que la ville avait été conquise. C'était le «Liberateur» en personne pour commander Le Gray la photographie qui devait devenir une véritable icône patriotique. Dans cette toile, Lo Forte a exécuté un type de «peinture photogénique» qui l'avait déjà rendu célèbre à Palerme quelque temps plus tôt.
