Samuel Hirszenberg fut l'un des premiers artistes à exposer le sort de ses compagnons juifs en Pologne dominée par la Russie au cours des premières années du XXe siècle. Au moment où il expose The Black Banner au Salon de la Société des Artistes 1906, il est établi comme participant fréquent aux expositions parisiennes. Peint en 1905, The Black Banner évoque l'intensification de la dévastation ressentie par les victimes de pogroms en ce moment.
