Miyamoto Musashi était un grand sabreur de l'époque d'Edo (1600-1868) et fondateur de l'école d'épée de Niten Ichiryu. Il était également un peintre et calligraphe fin, coiffant sa calligraphie après la dynastie du Song du Sud, l'artiste chinois Liang Kai, et sa peinture après l'artiste japonais Kaiho Yusho (1533-1615).
