Dans l'ouvrage --L'ancien commandant de la forteresse, l'auteur a trouvé important de révéler un événement apparemment inobservable; dans un paysage romantique par une vieille forteresse, le commandant est assis avec son chien, fumant une pipe et se remémorant les vieux temps. La subtilité psychologique, la mystérieuseté et l'humeur nettement légère de cette peinture sont caractéristiques d'autres œuvres de Spitzweg. L'auteur est engagé dans une réflexion sur la façon dont la solitude organisée, accomplie et pacifique peut être, par opposition à la tragédie et la solitude qui peuvent parfois se cacher dans une vie sociale active.
