Les caves à sel ont été fabriquées dans le fabricant du célèbre créateur des arts appliqués, Louis Comfort Tiffany, qui, en 1894, a breveté un type spécial de verre irisée – favril. Ce verre délicat et luxueux, avec une belle lueur métallique, a apporté sa renommée mondiale à son entreprise au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles. En 1900, ils ont reçu un prix à l'Exposition mondiale de Paris, et ils ont gagné une immense popularité. La même année, des vases à verre favril se retrouvent dans les collections de quarante-trois des plus grands musées du monde.
