Grâce à la similarité des mots, la combinaison visuelle du chêne (bai en chinois et haku en japonais) et du cerf (lu en chinois et roku en japonais) a transmis des souhaits pour un salaire élevé (littéralement, « cent). Le thème avait été popularisé au Japon par Shen Nanping, un peintre chinois qui vivait et enseignait à Nagasaki dans les années 1730.
