Tanaka a terminé le lycée préfectoral d'Urawa en 1904. Il voyage seul à Seattle, où il étudie la peinture et devient artiste. Ses peintures nues ont attiré l'attention. En 1920, il s'installe à Paris avec sa femme et est actif au Salon d'Automne et à d'autres expositions organisées périodiquement. Il est mort à Paris sans jamais retourner au Japon depuis qu'il a quitté sa patrie.
