Vers la fin de sa vie, Ribot, fortement influencé par les peintres espagnols du XVIIe siècle, en particulier Ribera, apporte un réalisme vigoureux et une prédilection pour des valeurs contrastées au sujet des paysans breton et normand. À partir des années 1870, il peint plusieurs portraits de groupe semblables à celui-ci.
