William John Pickett Bedford (1805–1869), ministre anglican, était l'aîné de trois enfants du clergé anglican, William Bedford (1781–1852), et de sa femme, Eleanor, et il vint à Van Diemens Land avec sa famille en 1823. Comme son frère cadet, Edward – qui plus tard s'est révélé être l'un des artistes condamnés Thomas Griffiths Wainewright, les plus importants mécènes et sympathisants – William a été renvoyé en Angleterre pour une formation universitaire, retour à Van Diemens Land en 1831, après une période à St John-Johns College, Cambridge. William fut ordonné à Hobart en 1832; il épousa Mary Anne Banks à Hobart l'année suivante, puis il habita Campbell Town, où il resta jusqu'aux années 1850. Bedford retourna en Angleterre avec Mary Anne et leurs trois enfants en 1859 et devint le vicaire de Bramford, Sussex. Bedford est devenu un homme d'énergie rare pour les améliorations qu'il a apportées à l'église et à l'école qu'il a établie dans le village. Il n'est jamais retourné en Australie ; il est mort à Hastings, Sussex, après avoir « souffert pendant un certain temps d'une maladie épuisante ».
