L'artiste a composé ce collier de feston à partir de portraits de ses enfants, neuf ovales d'ivoire liés comme collier pour sa femme, Jane Cook (1806-1889). Tel qu'il est décrit, les enfants ont entre un et seize ans; le premier-né, Charles, est mort en 1831 et est représenté posthume dans le plus petit ovale au centre. Les autres enfants sont (de gauche à droite) : Lydia M. (1837-1927), George F. (1835-1910), Henry R. (1829-1873), Thomas A. (1825-1859), Rebecca C. (1827-1859), Jane E. (1831-1903), Charles P. (1833-1879) et Sarah A. (1840-1919). Les Cummings eurent plus tard cinq autres enfants.
