Le peintre d'histoire John Trumbull a présenté Daniel Wadsworth (1771-1848) à des artistes émergents de l'époque, dont Thomas Sully, que Wadsworth a invité à peindre ce portrait. La baby-sitter met des gants en cuir buff avec des coutures rouges, caractéristiques de ceux portés en voyage. Wadsworth était un voyageur romantique et artiste amateur à part entière, qui cherchait de belles scènes à dessiner. Plus tard, Wadsworth fonda le Wadsworth Atheneum, qui s'ouvrit en 1844, et lui laissa la plupart des œuvres majeures de sa collection. Sully devait devenir le plus grand portraitiste de Philadelphie.
