Stevens était un peintre spécialisé dans les paysages. Au centre de cette composition, debout par un carrefour routier, est une auberge. Devant, il est assis un voyageur reposant, tandis que sur la route à côté d'elle un autre s'est reparti sur son voyage. En approche de la jonction, où un chariot à cheval s'est arrêté, c'est un homme avec une jambe. Sur la droite en arrière-plan, on peut voir les ruines d'un vieux château.
