Cette statuette non finie était peut-être destinée à l'extérieur d'un cabinet. La tête, les mains et les pieds de Cosimo ont été sculptés dans la chalcédonie dure, probablement par le spécialiste de la sculpture en pierre semi-précieuse, Torricelli. Outre les parties de la chalcédonie, le drapeau de bronze et les trophées militaires sont également originaux. L'armature du Grand-Duc a été sculptée en bois et les pièces ont été montées en 1952.
