Traditionnellement, un siège a été connecté au statut de son utilisateur. Le maître de la maison avait sa chaise, et en y prenant sa place, il proclama sa propriété de la maison. Les inventions des maisons du XVIIe siècle parlent d'une seule « chaire d'homme », ce qui signifie la principale. La chaise particulière représentée dans la photo est l'une des « chaises » néerlandaises les plus importantes et les plus coûteuses pour avoir survécu au début du 17e siècle.
