Tom Roberts rencontre Charles Conder à Sydney en 1888, et les deux peints ensemble à la plage de Coogee. Ces expéditions de peinture ont eu de l'influence sur la jeune Conde. Plus tard cette année-là, il suivit Roberts à Melbourne pour se joindre à lui et Arthur Streeton dans leur camp d'artistes à Heidelberg.
