Pendant son séjour au Saint-Paul-de-Mausole hôpital psychiatrique à Saint-Rémy-de-Provence , van gogh se tourne vers la campagne environnante pour enrichir sa géographie d'artiste . il peint et dessine inlassablement de nouveaux motifs provençaux : cyprès , oliveraies et collines . la chaîne des alpilles basses qui s'élève derrière les bâtiments de l'hôpital permet à vincent de peindre le massif accidenté ainsi que la carrière située à proximité .
