La figure agenouillée est le donneur qui a commandé la peinture. Sa robe sobre suggère qu'il était notaire ou avocat, peut-être de la ville de Parenzo, sous contrôle vénitien (aujourd'hui Porec en Croatie). A gauche se trouve probablement Catherine de Sienne ; à droite se trouvent St Nicolas et St François d'Assise. La composition asymétrique et l'intimité de l'Enfant, se penchant pour bénir le donneur, marquent un développement de retables formellement composés plus tôt. Catena a suivi le grand peintre vénitien Giovanni Bellini.
