Avec ce travail, il est possible de voir Stevens approche de l'abstraction. Essentiellement, il dissout la couleur et se forme en blocs à motifs audacieux qui donnent une unité visuelle à l'ensemble de l'œuvre, tout en isolant les champs de couleurs individuels... très à la manière d'Arshile Gorky et d'autres artistes abstraits travaillant à New York dans les années 1940. La palette ici est très subtile et diffère grandement de l'œuvre naturaliste en cours d'exécution dans la même période.
