Jusqu'à l'arrivée des troupes de l'Union, la Proclamation d'émancipation signifiait peu pour la plupart des esclaves dans les États confédérés d'Amérique. Pour les Afro-Américains vivant à Richmond, en Virginie, le jour de l'émancipation est arrivé le 3 avril 1865. L'événement a continué à être célébré chaque année ce jour-là au XXe siècle. Cette photographie montre la célébration en 1905, 40 ans après la fin de la guerre.
