La broderie est l'un des ensembles de suspensions identiques installés à l'origine au château Penkill dans le Ayrshire, en Écosse, à la fin des années 1860. Le château appartenait à Alice Boyd, maîtresse du peintre William Bell Scott, qui était étroitement lié à Dante Gabriel Rossetti et au cercle pré-raphaélite. Dans une lettre à Boyd en 1868, Rossetti référent aux broderies comme
