Le père Jan Neyen était un homme important dans l'histoire des Pays-Bas. Il était commissaire général de six provinces de l'Ordre des Frères Mineurs aux Pays-Bas et dans l'Empire allemand. En 1607, il est envoyé par l'archiduc Albert et l'archiduchesse Isabella à La Haye, pour représenter les Pays-Bas du Sud dans les négociations avec la République. Ces pourparlers ont finalement conduit, le 9 avril 1609, aux Douze ans. La trêve, une trêve pendant la guerre des 80 ans. Selon un vieux document qui était autrefois au verso de la peinture, le portrait date de 1607, quand Neyen avait environ 37 ans.
