Le Christ apparaît sur la croix contre un ciel sombre. Une Vierge Marie et saint Jean affligés se tiennent de chaque côté, accompagnés de deux figures agenouillées. On est un moine chartreux, dont la vie monastique était centrée sur la solitude et la prière. L'autre est un homme riche vêtu d'un manteau à fourrure. Ces deux hommes très différents ont peut - être été frères, un ou les deux ayant commandé cette peinture. L'artiste est inconnu mais son style raffiné suggère qu'il a peut-être travaillé avec le célèbre peintre Quinten Massys en Flandre, en Belgique moderne.
