Xiang Shengmo est né à Xiushui (aujourd'hui Jaxing), province de Zhajiang, également connu sous son nom de courtoisie Kongzhang et les noms littéraires Yian, Xushanqiao, et Songtaosanxian. Il était le petit-fils de Xiang Yuanbian, un célèbre collectionneur de la dynastie Ming. Xiang Shengmo excelle dans la peinture de paysage. Il a d'abord imité les peintures de Wen Zhengming, puis est passé aux styles des époques Song et Yuan. Il s'est également spécialisé dans la peinture de fleurs où il aimait employer des couleurs vives et un style rafraîchissant. Il était tout aussi doué pour peindre des pins, et les pins qu'il a peints étaient connus sous le nom de pins Xiang (xiangsong).
