Xu a commencé à peindre cette grande œuvre en 1928 et l'a achevée avant 1930, alors qu'il était employé à l'Université centrale nationale. Tian Heng et ses cinq cent abonnés dépeignent une histoire tirée des archives du Grand historien. Après que Liu Bang se soit proclamé Empereur de la dynastie Han (206 av. J.-C.–220 av. J.-C.), il a offert l'amnistie à Tian Heng. Si Tian n'acceptait pas, Liu le tuerait. Afin de sauver la vie de cinq cents de son peuple, Tian Heng leur fait ses adieux et part pour la capitale.
