C'était le portrait que Xu Beihong aimait le mieux. Chen Sanli (1853-1937), nom de courtoisie Boyan et nom de plume Sanyuan, était de Yining, Jiangxi. Il a passé ses dernières années à Beiping. Il était un personnage clé de l'école Tongguang, et il était considéré comme le dernier poète traditionnel de la Chine. Pendant l'occupation japonaise de Beiping, il meurt de faim. Cette peinture accrochée dans le salon Chen. Son père, Chen Baozhen, a été un personnage important dans la réforme des cent jours. Chen Sanli, fils de Chen Yinke et Chen Hengke (Chen Shizeng), étaient respectivement historiens et peintres. Chen Sanli, Tan Sitong, Ding Huikang et Wu Baochu ont été collectivement appelés les Quatre Fils de la Réforme des Cent Jours, mais après la Réforme des Cent Jours, Chen s'est rarement impliqué dans la politique, se disant un observateur sans souci.
