Ce travail appartient aux derniers mois de la vie de Titian. C'était dans son studio à sa mort et fut ensuite vendu par son fils Pomponio. Le sujet mystérieux de cette peinture inquiétante n'est pas connu. C'est l'une des dernières œuvres de l'artiste.
