Rembrandt avait un grand studio avec de nombreux élèves qui imitaient son style et même sa signature. En conséquence, le débat féroce sur la paternité de ses peintures se poursuit aujourd'hui. Ce travail a été universellement attribué à Rembrandt jusqu'à ce que les savants le démoté en 1982, en soutenant que le rendu de l'espace, de la texture et de l'anatomie suggère une imitation habile par un artiste inconnu. En l'absence de documentation ou de preuves concluantes de l'analyse technique, le débat se poursuit.
